What is a Volume Label and how do I find out it's name?

Simply put, the Volume Label is the name of a disk. A volume label can contain as many as 32 characters for NTFS volumes and as many as 11 characters for FAT volumes and can include spaces but no tabs. An example of a Volume Label would be "DATA" or "MY INFO". There are a number of ways to find out what an existing drive's Volume Label is. You may use Disk Management (in Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management) or the LABEL command from a command prompt. Using the LABEL command: Click on the Start menu and then Run and type in CMD. When at the command prompt, type in LABEL F: You will see something similar to this example: Volume in drive F: is DATA Volume Serial Number is A1A0-F1F0 Volume label (ENTER for none)? (Press ENTER to continue) Delete current volume label (Y/N)? N (Select N to keep the existing label).
